Big East showdown pits Panthers against Hoyas

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/03/2009 - Washington, D.C. (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Two of the Big East's best teams collide in our nation's capital this afternoon, as the third-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers come calling on the 11th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas. This game is a rematch of the last two Big East Tournament Championship games, as Pittsburgh claimed the 2008 title, while the Hoyas were crowned 2007 champs.

Jamie Dixon's Panthers are a flawless 13-0 this season, and kept their perfect mark intact with a 78-72 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday in the team's Big East opener.

John Thompson III has guided his Hoyas to a 10-1 start this year, with the lone loss coming in late November against Tennessee (90-78). Since then, the team has reeled off seven straight wins, including perhaps the team's most impressive victory of the year, knocking off second-ranked and previously unbeaten Connecticut in Big East action on Monday, 74-63.

This is the 72nd all-time meeting between these two teams on the hardwood. The Panthers have won the last two matchups to close Georgetown's gap in the overall series to 39-32.

The Panthers struggled against Rutgers last time out and actually trailed by five points halfway through the second half, before going on a 9-0 run and taking control of the game late, en route to a six-point victory. Pittsburgh was able to spread the wealth offensively in the game, as five players finished in double figures, led by Sam Young's 18 points. Brad Wanamaker had a strong game off the bench, tallying 15 points, five rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes of work. Levance Fields and Gilbert Brown chipped in 11 points apiece, while Jermaine Dixon finished with 10. It was certainly a yeoman's effort for Pittsburgh, which was without standout center DeJuan Blair for much of the game due to early foul trouble. The Panthers were able to continue to perform without their man in the middle thanks to great scoring depth and outstanding defense. That has been the case all season long, as the team is averaging 77.9 ppg, while limiting the opposition to a mere 58.2. Young has been outstanding, shooting .521 from the floor, en route to 19.9 ppg. Blair has been a monster in the paint, averaging a double-double with 13.7 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. Fields has the ability to score as well (10.4 ppg), but he is much better when getting others involved in the offense, leading the way with 6.4 apg.

The Hoyas got off to a fast start and held the hometown Huskies to a mere 37.5 percent shooting in the first half, taking a nine-point lead into the break. Georgetown was able to convert 50 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, and despite shooting just 42.9 percent in the second half, the team was able to hold off UConn in the second stanza. Forcing 17 turnovers certainly helped along the way, as the Hoyas capitalized, scoring 26 points off those miscues. Forward DaJuan Summers led four players in double figures in the victory, as he poured in 18 points. Center Greg Monroe and guard Chris Wright added 16 points apiece, while Austin Freeman chipped in with 13 points. The Hoyas are a dangerous team at both ends of the court, but it is stingy defense which sets the tone, with Georgetown holding foes to a mere 56.3 ppg, on an anemic .343 shooting. Scoring depth is apparent, as four players come into this game averaging double digits. Summers paces the team with 14.6 ppg and is followed closely by Freeman (13.6 ppg), Wright (13.5 ppg) and Monroe (12.7 ppg).

Betting the NFL preseason

Rule No. 1 in the gamblers' handbook states, "Avoid sports betting on meaningless games."

When you're drowning in a sea of baseball monotony, however, things change. Even a hint of pro football betting can persuade the most disciplined bettor to break a few rules.

The NFL preseason is around the corner, with a tempting Hall of Fame match kicking off on Sunday. But bettors must stay vigilant. Wagering on NFL exhibition games is an entirely different beast than the regular season. Most fans don't recognize the players on the field because starters get as much action in August as Warcraft fans get on Prom night.

The only certainty about the NFL this time of year is uncertainty – and yet there are some who say betting in August can be a gold mine.

“I actually feel the NFL preseason presents solid profit opportunities for sharp bettors and handicappers,” Sports Expert Steve Merril explains. “My experience has been that the sportsbooks fear the preseason, which is evident by lower limits and massive moves.”

The line moves are attributed to the limited knowledge available regarding playing-time distribution. One team’s top unit out on the field for one more series has an impact on the pointspread. Setting lines in the preseason often is a shot in the dark.

“We base the betting lines mostly on public perception,” Pete Korner, founder of the Sports Club in Las Vegas, says. “It’s very tough to predict, almost a guessing game.”

The preseason is all about figuring out who’s in and for how long.

“It becomes a race between bettors and oddsmakers to find out how long the quarterbacks are going to stay in,” Korner admits. “If a sharp gets the information first, he could exploit an early line. I’m a full believer in moving the line in the preseason if the books find out something late in the week.”

Determining what each team’s motive is can help bettors handicap. To do this you must pay close attention to the philosophies head coaches employ in exhibition play.

“You need to know what a coach is trying to accomplish,” says Covers Expert Bryan Leonard. “Sometimes a new coach will want to instill a winning attitude. Others just want to make sure their starters don’t get hurt."

So how do you distinguish who’s playing scared and who’s playing for keeps?

“Head coaches on the hot seat or new coaches trying to implement a winning attitude usually try harder to win in the preseason,” Merril says.

Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel fits this criteria. He’s entering his third season as the sideline boss and has yet to lead the Browns to more than six wins.

Cleveland is an enticing bet as well because of the unresolved quarterback situation. General manager Phil Savage sacrificed the Browns’ first-round pick in next year’s draft for Brady Quinn, but the former Notre Dame quarterback hasn’t signed or reported to training camp yet.

Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson split time at QB last season and it looks like either player (or even Quinn) could be the opening-day starter.

“If a team has quarterback depth and the pecking order hasn’t been decided, it’s a big advantage,” Leonard says.

Even in the third week of the preseason when starters generally play the most, the final outcome of the game is in the hands of fringe players. A team's talent, all the way down to the last man on the roster, is something to consider.

The New England Patriots have long been considered one of the deeper teams in the NFL and coach Bill Belichick has said in the past he’s unafraid of stars getting hurt in games with nothing on the line. He shocked his colleagues in 2003 by playing some of his starters on special teams in the preseason.

“We want to have the team ready to play a tough, physical game and preparation has to go into that and I imagine a certain amount of injuries go with it,” Belichick told the Providence Journal in August 2003.

Bettors can only hope to find more teams that share the Pats' business-like approach to the preseason (New England is 17-9-3 against the spread since 2000) and take advantage of teams who detest the exhibition schedule.

Eastern Conference Playoff Betting Trends

We all know by now that the “public” loves to put their money on the FAVORITES and the OVERS.  Just by taking a quick glance at Sportsbook.com’s “Betting Trends” it appears as is this tendency will continue as far as the Eastern Conference games are concerned.  For the inaugural games of the first round, 69% of the early money is on Toronto -4.5; 59% of bettors prefer Chicago -4.5; 84% are backing Detroit -9; and 56% think Cleveland -11.5 is the way to go.  As far as TOTALS are concerned, the only UNDER the “public” is backing is the Cleveland/ Washington game in which 83% are pounding the UNDER (190).  Remember, there is no better way to predict a possible line change than by monitoring MySportsbook.com’s “Betting Trends”.   By determining who the “public” is backing, you can get the most ideal line for your bet.  For example, if you are siding with the public you better place your bet before the line moves in the wrong direction.  On the other side of the coin, if you prefer the team that the “public” is betting against; you might be able to get and extra ½ or even more by placing your bet a bit later.  Under the “Betting Trends” section, Sportsbook.com also provides plenty of statistical data and trends in order for the bettor to make the most informed pick.  Below are some extremely important trends for the first round opponents of the Eastern Conference match-ups, more can be found at MySportsbook.com
